Greenville Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:

What animals eat groundhogs?

Groundhog belongs to the squirrel family, and they also known as a woodchuck. You may find them in the northeast and central parts of North America.

They lived in an open habitat like a forest; farm and you may also find them in the house too. They produce quickly, so they have the power to destroy a file, this is the reason they remain on the target by the hunts.

Groundhog body is covered with a grayish fur. They have small ears but strong jaws. They have short legs that help them to run fast.

The size of Groundhog varies from 16 to 26 inches while the weight ranges from 4 to 9 pounds. They usually like to stay active in the early morning or during early noon.

They are considered excellent swimmers and climbers. They like to eat a small insect, and they also eat grass, crops, nuts, and sometimes they eat leaves sometimes to get food and some time to fulfill the water deficiency.

Groundhog is also used to study on liver cancer.

Groundhog whistle when their life is in danger. This is the reason they know as a whistle pig. Unlike their prey on small insects to eat them similarly they also have predators:

Groundhog Predators

Animals that like to prey on Groundhog are given below

Bobcat

A house cat may do not like to eat Groundhog, but a wild or bobcat, if got the chance, they will prey on Groundhog. For a bobcat, a Groundhog can be tasty food, and they would like them to eat in their dinner.

Birds

There are many birds that like to prey on Groundhog, but mainly hawks, eagle, and owl are on top. They have sharp eye-side, which helps them to capture their target from a given distance.

Foxes

The Groundhog lives in open habitat or forest that is also a living place for other mammals. All the mammals fulfill their belly by eating other species. If foxes find them for sure, they will prey on them.

Dogs

Most of the people get help from dogs to get rid of Groundhog as they can destroy their garden. Wild dogs are also considered as the Groundhog primary predators.

Wolves

Unlike dogs, if wolves got the chance, they will definitely prey on both young and adult Groundhog.

Vehicles

Although vehicles do not consider the primary predators if a Groundhog lives near the urban areas that they are at the high risk of being killed by a vehicle while crossing or running on the road.

Human

A human cannot bear the mammals that cause odor and can become a reason of disease.

Their poop contains a bad odor, and taking a breath in that place can cause many health issues. Humans usually use a trap, but if they have reproduced, then only poison can help to get rid of them.

Much human use they as a pet animal while others like to hunt them to get the meat.
